Blasthole Bits

Ridgeback™ Blasthole Bits are the industry’s most innovative roller cone product for blast-hole applications. These products feature the patented Ridgeback feature, a bit body geometry which allows efficient evacuation of the drilled cuttings, improved drilling rates and extended bit life. The bearings and cutting structures of Ridgeback bits are optimized using mathematical models to ensure they deliver the lowest possible total drilling cost (TDC).

With the acquisition of Walker McDonald in 1999, Varel International consolidated the range of products provided to the mining and industrial markets. The result was the development and introduction of the patent protected Ridgeback Series of blasthole drill bits.

The new features incorporated into the Ridgeback models are:

"Ridgeback" Feature on the Bit Leg

Allows drilled cuttings to be removed from the hole more effectively, improves penetration rates, reduces regrinding and wear to the shirttails, and in some cases the larger cuttings are used for stemming.

Vented Cones

Provides additional air-flow through the bearings for better cooling and longer bearing life. Reduces coring.

Tungsten Carbide Inserts

Dedicated manufacturing facility allows for total control over the design, quality, production and development of carbide inserts.

Bearings

Extended bearing life is achieved by the use of specialized rollers, newly designed tungsten carbide thrust buttons, and premium quality “clean” steel.
