Formation Analysis for Drill Bit Applications

GeoScience is Varel’s proprietary well log, lithology, and rock property analysis software. The Varel method is built on top of the commercially available and very successful Petrolog Advanced Log Data Analysis software from Crocker Data. Over the past eight years Varel has built proprietary algorithmic analytical capabilities onto the base software to make it a leading tool for drill bit applications improvement. Varel’s algorithmic model has been tested and correlated using formation cores and through single cutter testing.

Using customer-supplied mud logs, drilling logs, and electric log data Varel builds a virtual model of the make up of the well sections to be drilled. Historic bit performance is evaluated using a specific energy method that allows for correlation across different bore diameters. The GeoScience technology and method leads to a far better understanding of the drilling challenge to be met. Typically GeoScience helps to identify the type and size of PDC cutter that should be recommended for the application. The output from GeoScience is structured to port directly into Varel’s SPOT tool.
